Are you hiding behind your portfolio?

The reason many of us don’t show up on video is because its hard.

But let me ask you - is struggling to grow and not hitting your income goals harder?

Is feeling ignored harder? Or dealing with a constant stream of tire kicker clients who never sign up - is that harder?

In my opinion, it’s’ your job as a creative business owner to stand out in your market, to have a voice, to differentiate yourself from every one else doing a similar thing to you.
We may think our style is the thing that makes us stand out but honestly most clients couldn’t tell the difference.

In my experience, talking direct to camera and making video is one of the easiest ways to differentiate yourself from every other designer out there hiding behind their work.

Video is HARD.

I’m not sugar coating it.

But if we tell ourselves, its not me, I could never do that, I’m not extroverted, I’m too scared to show my opinion, what does that say about us?

It says we run from hard things.

Being a freelancer is a hard thing.

It’s why most give up and go back to jobs even though they start out with the best intention.

We just have a hard month or two and say - it’s too hard.

When if we pushed through that third month could have been our biggest yet…

The reason I’m such a big advocate for video is because i know its the easiest way to stand out in a noisy environment like Instagram.

It’s not just showing up, waving at the camera smiling then ripping through a Timelapse.

That gets boring real quick.

It’s speaking on camera, sharing who you are, having an opinion.

Clients are drawn to designers and creatives who believe the same things they believe, who are like them.

Who polarise - this is where I stand, do you stand with me? Or against me?

Who are striving just like them, who are facing challenges just like them.

Freelance is a hard thing.

Video is a hard thing.

But what’s the alternative?

Push towards for, not away from.

Fear is often telling you where you need to go next.
